Nuala Connolly
Internal Communications Executive – People TeamWhy did you decide to join the business?
I was looking for a new role for a long time and nothing ticked every box like the Internal Communications role at Bensons. After my and meeting my now line manager, I knew Bensons was a workplace culture and environment I wanted to be a part of.
And secondly, the world of mattresses and sleep is fascinating!! So much goes into our amazing products from research and production, to marketing, retail and logistics. I love sleep (although I never get enough of it!) and I wanted to be a part of a business that is helping the nation get a great nights sleep!

What do you love most about working at bensons for beds?
I love that my role is varied, and I get to work with most departments across the business. This has given me a great understanding on how Bensons operates and what part everyone plays in our success.
I also love that no two days are the same. One day I could be filming the CEO talking about an ‘all colleague’ survey and the next I could be writing a weekly brief for our logistics team, or designing posters to promote new products internally. Other things I love, and I am sure others have mentioned it – the people! Everyone at Bensons is friendly, approachable and helpful - even at the most senior of levels. There are no airs, graces or egos! It’s what makes us a great place to work!
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
The variety that each day brings ( as mentioned above!.) Also engaging colleagues in everything that goes on across the business is really rewarding. Since starting we have seen levels of colleague engagement increase substantially and it has created a great workplace culture. It’s things like this that get’s be motivated every day!
What is your bed time routine?
Sit in a dark room in absolute silence! I can’t have any noise or distractions as my hearing is super sensitive to noise. Hearing a pin drop will keep me awake!
What development have you received whilst working at bensons for beds?
Lots! I have learnt a huge amount of new skills. My role requires a lot of design work and when I started with the business I was feeling anxious about my design skills. However, I have been given lots of time to learn and develop these skills and I can now confidently create artwork for posters, signs and our internal magazine in a fraction of the time it used to take me.
How do you feel working at bensons for beds has helped you in your personal life?
The benefits are really clear and easy to use. I have worked in other companies with good benefits, but using them was the most complicated thing ever, to the point where I didn’t bother. At Bensons everyone knows what they are entitled to and things like claiming back costs of site tests, glasses or prescriptions is so simple and easy.
If a colleague has a question on benefits, then our amazing People team are always on hand to help!
What one piece of advice would you give someone starting a new career with bensons for beds?
Be curious about our products and take time to learn about all of them. It really is fascinating what we do, and I’d encourage everyone to learn about how our products are made at the factory. Some of the science, technology and that goes into a mattress is mind-blowing!
Understanding what we do will without a doubt make your role more interesting and exciting!
